Victorian Department of Transport All Aboard with Unisys Passenger Information System for Metropolitan Train StationsUnisys to modernize customer information service application to improve accuracy of predicted train arrivals at railway stationsSYDNEY, August 4, 2009 – The Victorian Department of Transport has selected Unisys Australia to modernize the passenger information application used to calculate predicted train arrivals at the 220 stations on the Melbourne metropolitan train network. The new customer information system is designed to improve the accuracy of schedule updates given to rail passengers waiting on platforms, particularly when there are disruptions such as train breakdowns, natural disasters or medical emergencies.
The six-year contract, awarded in a competitive bid in June this year, has an estimated value of approximately AUD$11.4 million (approximately US$9 million). Under the contract Unisys will develop and supply the new customer information application and required hardware. This will involve advisory, architecture design, development, testing and multi-year support services, to modernize the Department of Transport’s legacy passenger information system. Unisys will also provide ongoing support for both the new and old systems while the new application is gradually rolled out across the metropolitan rail network.
Unisys will use its unique 3D Blueprinting™ methodology during the development phase of the project to provide a digital model of the workflows and linkages that connect through the Department’s organizational layers. Identifying the intricate interrelationship of the many facets of the applications and infrastructure within the system will help Unisys calculate predicted train arrivals when there have been disruptions to the normal flow of the train network.
The new application, to be developed by Unisys, is expected to be built in the Linux Open Source environment using Java development tools. The Open Source approach is designed to increase the flexibility of the application environment to reduce support costs through easier maintenance of the system.
A key part of the new system is the integration of the Unisys Next Generation Notification Service (NGNS), developed by Unisys and used by leading telecommunications providers.
